9. Berica Gravel (Veneto)

Berica Gravel is a gravel ride in the Leonian countryside and the Berici hills (Colli Berici), a group of hills, a special formation in the alluvial plain on which stands Vicenza, originated on the bottom of an ancient sea over at least a hundred million years.

With 3,000 participants, The Tuscany Trail, organised since 2014, claims to be the world's biggest bikepacking event and also ranks among the most popular bikepacking events worldwide. 3. Gran Fondo Strade Bianche (Tuscany)

The granfondo version of the famous Strade Bianche is as popular as the pro race, which only doesn't figure on the list of cycling monuments due to it's short history. Participants of the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche can experience big parts of the route for pro riders crossing the beautiful Tuscan countryside and ending in the famous Piazza del Campo in Siena.

2. L'Eroica (Tuscany)

Our runner up, L'Eroica shouldn't need any introduction. First organized in 1997 and the inspiration for the nowadays world-renowned Strade Bianche, it might be considered as the instigator of the gravel hype in Europe, along with some U.S. gravel grinder. L'Eroica is actually a retro bike ride on mainly dirt roads and has grown into a brand with a series of similar Eroica events worldwide.

The original L'Eroica starts in Gaiole in Chianti in Tuscany where lovers of classic steel and vintage bicycles should at least visit La Bottega di Gaiole.

1. UCI Gravel World Championship (Veneto)

Our, as mentioned before "particular", winner is the second UCI Gravel World Championship (open for Elite and amateur cyclists) and confirms the still growing hype of gravel. The 28-year-old Slovenian Matej Mohoric won the race in front of the Belgian Florian Vermeersch and British Connor Swift. First non elite rider was the good old Alejandro Valverde followed by the American mountain bike and gravel cyclist Keegan Swenson (full results).
