We start the episodes of most popular cycling events with the most popular granfondo in Italy.
What exactly is a Granfondo or Gran Fondo?
Originated in Italy both terms are used for mass-participation cycling events of an amateur or competitive nature, held over a long distance. In Italy it is officially defined and certified by the Italian Cycling Federation as a bicycle event of at least 120 km (75 mi), and are individually chip-timed (start to finish) races. Outside of Italy the term granfondo or gran fondo is commonly used for cyclosportive events though those rides might only have timed segments, which Battistrada categorizes as cyclosportives, sportives or just bike rides.
In Italy the term granfondo is also used for long distances MTB races (called MTB Granfondo) who are shorter than a Cross-Country Marathon or XCM Marathon. In this list we excluded the MTB granfondo.
