Organizer: The amateur cycling race Granfondo Circuito dei Mondiali '76 in Ostuni has its origins in the World Road Cycling Championships held on 5 September 1976. On that occasion, Belgian Freddy Maertens took victory by beating Italian Francesco Moser in a final sprint.
In the wake of this historic event, the Bici Club Ostuni was founded in 1976 by a group of local volunteers who were passionate about cycling. The association dedicated itself to the organisation of the '76 Granfondo Circuito dei Mondiali del '76, which takes place on the same route as the 1976 World Championships.
